Military career

​

Henri Langie entered the Belgian army as a volunteer at the start of WW I. He started as a stretcher-bearer but quickly rose through the ranks, ending as second-lieutenant at the end of the war.

 

After WW I Henri enlisted as a fulltime soldier in the Belgian army and was stationed in Ghent. He rose the rank of Captain and was transferred to the Ardennes. Here he was pivotal to establish the legendary regiment of the Ardennes Hunters.

 

As a Captain-Commander in WWII, he led a battalion's retreat through Belgium and France and was taken prisoner of war and sent to POW camp Oflag II-A in Prenzlau, Germany.

Shortly after the end of the war Henri returned back home in Ghent and retired as an Honorary Major.​​

The Book

​

Based on Henri's diaries spanning from 1917 to 1977, Henri's great-grandson Tom was able to reconstruct his extraordinary life in great detail. With the help of his father Eric, Tom spent more than 10 years researching his great grandfather's life. Complemented with countless sources, photographs and memorabilia the biography of Henri was completed and released in 2023 in Dutch and in 2025 in English.

Many of Henri's diaries, photographs and items have been passed on from generation to generation and still reside in the family archive to this day.
